Bart De Spiegeleer

1. Kwaliteit en analyse van nieuwe geneesmiddelen, (pre)klinische onderzoeken en post-goedkeuringen (door de EU erkend GMP-laboratorium; EMA-kwaliteitsdeskundige).
2. Regelgeving van gezondheidsproducten, met de nadruk op medicijnen, gedurende hun levenscyclus, van ontdekking tot markttoegang.
3. ADME bij knaagdieren (incl. BBB-onderzoek) en transdermale/mucosale diffusie-experimenten (Franz-cellen met menselijke huid en orale mucosa van varkens).
4. Peptiden als bioactieve moleculen (biomarkers, medicijnen): (bio)analyse, doelinteractie, farmacodynamiek en farmacokinetiek (receptor, cel, weefsel/orgaan, knaagdier). Een speciale focus op peptiden ligt op de quorum sensing peptiden, geproduceerd door micro-organismen, waaronder ons microbioom. Deze groep bacteriële moleculen is ook een verklarende factor in de interactie tussen gastheer en microbioom (bijv. kanker, psychiatrische ziekten, immuunsysteem, sarcopenie).

Prof. Dr. De Spiegeleer received a Master degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1982) and a second degree in Teaching Education (1986) from Ghent University. He was a research fellow at the University of Manchester (UK) (1988). He also completed his Doctoral Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Ghent University (1989) on anticancer platinum compounds. He followed postgraduate business administration (KUL, 1988) and middle management programme at the Vlerick’s Management School (1993). Being an industrial pharmacist (1986), he is a registered qualified person for the release of pharmaceutical products as well as a responsible person for pharmaco-vigilance (2000) and pharmaceutical information (2000).

Previously, Prof. Dr. De Spiegeleer worked in the pharmaceutical industry as qualified person, QA-QC head, regulatory affairs, technical and R&D manager at Federa and Couvreur (1989-1994). He was the founder and general manager of several small and medium enterprises (1994-2008) such as HEA (now Ardena), IDPhar, Chemiphar, Anabiotec, Phuso (now Bouteligier & De Kerf). From 2004-2008, he was part-time guest-professor at Ghent University, and since October 2008 full-time professor.

Prof. Dr. De Spiegeleer’s work has appeared in numerous publications, meeting-abstracts and patents, including peer reviewed journals like Analytical Chemistry, Nature Materials, Talanta, Analytical Chimica Acta, Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, Journal of Chromatography. He was one of the founders and Editor of Journal of Planar Chromatography (1988-1991). He currently serves as editor (e.g. Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis) and referee for different international scientific journals.

Prof. Dr. De Spiegeleer doceert ook Advanced Drug Analysis and Quality, Regulatory Affairs of Health Products, Farmaceutische managementvaardigheden, Regulatory Quality of medicine, Pharmaceutical-Industrial Regulatory Affairs en de geïntegreerde bacheloropleiding. Hij is de hoofdcoördinator van het Erasmus+ Mundus Joint Master Degree Program in Sustainable Drug Discovery (acroniem: S-DISCO). Dit EU-partnerschap van vier universiteiten en meer dan 20 geassocieerde academische en industriële partners werd in 2021 door de Europese Commissie geselecteerd om financiering te verstrekken aan getalenteerde studenten van over de hele wereld. Hij is EMA-expert, lid van de Belgische Farmacopeecommissie en van de Commissie voor de opstelling van technische monografieën voor farmaceutische ingrediënten.
