Biography

Prof. Dr. Van Den Noortgate, is head of the geriatric department at the University Hospital Ghent and full professor in geriatric medicine at the University Ghent. She is also a trained physician in Palliative Care Medicine, secretary of the Palliative Care Interest Group of the EUGMS, member of the EAPC-EUGMS-Maruzza foundation task force concerning palliative care for the older people and president of the working group ‘palliative care in geriatric medicine’ of the Flanders Federation for Palliative Care.

Her PhD focussed on the outcome of older patients with acute renal failure and the role of prognostic indices. She is building up a multidisciplinary geriatric team focusing on sarcopenia, frailty and end of life care in the older hospitalized population. As member of the executive board of the European Academy for Medicine of Ageing, she is teaching innovative geriatric care to many European geriatricians.

Prof. Van Den Noortgate is author and co-author of numerous publications and meeting-abstracts in journals such as Age and Ageing, the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), Palliative Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. She is actively involved in the supervision of master’s theses and some research projects.
